WASHINGTON (CNN) -- President Bush spared former White House aide I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby from prison, and his clemency order may wipe out Libby's 2-year probation as well, the trial judge told lawyers Tuesday.Does anyone think this is an accident?
A conviction remains on Scooter Libby's record, and he must still pay a $250,000 fine.
Strictly interpreted, the statute authorizing probation indicates that supervised release "should occur only after the defendant has already served a term of imprisonment," U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton wrote.
Walton ordered lawyers to weigh in with their arguments on the matter by Monday.
No jail, no probation and a fine that his friends will pay for him. Yep, that's some punishment, eh?

Just thought I'd note that I doubt Libby will ever practice law again. Even if he's granted a pardon (which to me seems likely, on 19 Jan 2009), bar associations can disbar him for his behavior, and for the most part, don't have to explain themselves.

That's my hope too. Because you know Chimpy's gonna pardon him on the way out the door.
He'll still make a fortune as a lobbyist meanwhile. And once he's pardoned, the next Repuke preznit will be able to give him a security clearance again.

Let's hope Scooter and the lot of them are in their dotage before there's another Rethug president.
Scooter's fortune was about $5 million, when reported last year. He inherited a lot, and earned more as a DC attorney.
For instance, Scooter represented Marc Rich in begging for a pardon from Bill Clinton. That kind of success earns big bucks.
But as Four Legs says, Libby's friends will probably pay his fine thru his legal defense fund. Then Cheney will put him in some high pay, low profile position in the private sector.
