Oh my! 7 species in One Forest
This is rather amazing:
Caught by a camera trap, a leopard prowls under the dense canopy of the Jeypore-Dehing lowland rain forest in the northeast Indian state of Assam (map).Via National Geographic News: 7 Cat Species Found in One Forest
Released in February, the picture was taken during a two-year survey supported by the Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund, the Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment, the Rufford Small Grants Foundation, and the Wildlife Conservation Society.
The research found seven cat species in a 354-square-mile (570-square-kilometer) range—the highest diversity of cat species yet photographed in a single area.
Wildlife biologist Kashmira Kakati had been studying the gibbons of Jeypore-Dehing and became curious about the predator tracks she kept finding on the ground.
"I said, I need to find out what's there," Kakati told National Geographic News. "Nobody had any clue. People who had been in the forest 30 years didn't know."
Sneaky kittehs! no one even knew they were there.

Not plushy but cool anyway
Obama doesn't have enough hair to be plushy (though some days I wish he'd grow an afro just to irritate the right wing) but we like him anyway. Good friend JDW waited in line 2 hours on Sunday to get tickets, and then braved the cold and rain today to attend Obama's health care rally in Ohio.
As you can see, he got pretty close to the president. This photo was shot just before he shook the president's hand - said handshake has now doomed JDW to "dirty fucking hippy" status for all eternity.
JDW describes the tone in the hall as "resolute." Good.
We thank him for enduring the cold, rain, crowds and security nonsense and turning out to support reform in person.
I must confess to be disappointed that he didn't come back with a frame of Obama putting his shoe up Kucinich's ass.
