Friday huge kitten blogging
Rippppp-llllleeeeeeeeeeeey!!
She's up and about and feeling better today. She's still not quite sure what to make of Maddie, who just wants to play with her. Maddie is only a month older, but she's twice as big as Ripley. They're not fighting though, and Maddie doesn't seem upset. She's completely fascinated by her, and she keeps making, "let's play!!" overtures.
I think they'll be BFFs in no time.

New kidden
Meet Ripley Chainsaw Bonjambes.
She's kind of a funny little thing. She immediately growled at Maddie, who is completely fascinated with her, but won't go right up to her because RIpley keeps growling at her. Teh funny.
She explored the apartment a little, batted a a few toys and is now sleeping. I'm sure she'll feel better in the morning. I don't have to worry about Maddie attacking her- Maddie is just so sweet and gentle, she just wants to play.
She has a funny, kind of a squished face. Hee.
She pretty much wants to just sleep.
More pics when she wakes up. She has nice eartufts, eh?
Update: about the name, she's not terribly feminine and she seems rather fearless, so I think Ripley suits her.

Kitten update
Still in jail!! I just spoke to the shelter and no one has claimed her yet. They have until end of business today to do so. She'll get her medical workup in the morning (to make sure she doesn't have feline AIDS or feline leukemia) and then get scheduled for surgery. I hate that she has to stay there all week.
Come friday it will be kitten madness!!
Holy Cow
Boston Herald
Shamelessly stolen from Watertiger. I don't know if this photo is real or not, but holy moly! That's one big pooch.

I'm in jail, break me out!!
Orion
Believe it or not, Hubble is 16 years old. Via Space.com, this amazing photograph is of the Orion Nebula:
In one of the most detailed astronomical images ever produced, NASA's Hubble Space Telescope captured an unprecedented look at the Orion Nebula. This turbulent star formation region is one of astronomy's most dramatic and photogenic celestial objects. More than 3,000 stars of various sizes appear in this image. Some of them have never been seen in visible light. These stars reside in a dramatic dust-and-gas landscape of plateaus, mountains, and valleys that are reminiscent of the Grand Canyon. The Orion Nebula is a picture book of star formation, from the massive, young stars that are shaping the nebula to the pillars of dense gas that may be the homes of budding stars.Beautiful.
Earth Day
One of the things I like best about NYC (and something that always surprises visitors) is just how green the city is, and just how many trees there are.
Of course there can always be more. The trees tend to be in the residential areas and there are very few trees in Harlem, Midtown and the Bronx. When I lived there I came up with the idea that every roof in the city should be planted with trees as a way to combat pollution. I couldn't get anyone to listen to me, but I still think the idea of the entire city being blanketed in trees is a fun one. (And yes, I realize there would be structural issues with a lot of buildings. I'd settle for solar arrays instead).
In the meantime, I think Bloomberg's idea to to plant one million trees in NYC by 2017 is a good one. Let's hope other cities follow suit.
The photo above was taken in Bryant Park last September. The park is a delightful sylvan oasis in the middle of midtown.
New Baby Sister
Okay, naming time!!
I am first on the list for this cute little girl. She was a stray, so I have to wait for 3 days to make sure no one claims her, but I'm going to be optimistic.
She's the funniest little thing- she was cocking her head and meowing and rolling over and sticking her little white feeties out at me. I think she'll be a good companion for princess Madeleine. She has the loveliest fur- grey with dark charcoal stripes on her legs, tummy and tail, and the fur on her back is more of a solid light grey with dark charcoal tips. She has white feets, a pink nose and nice long white whiskers and ear tufts.
And she's teh sweet. I can't wait to bring her home. Leave your suggestions in comments.
Update: Here's a blurry photo I took with my camera phone at the shelter. You can see how adorable she is.
