Reality Check

The headlines are all about Iraq's new unity government and we'll hear lots of pronouncements from chimpy this week on "progress" and "staying the course," but let's not forget what daily life looks like for the Iraqi people.

AP Karim Kadim, Saturday, May 20th

AP/Kalid Mohammed, Sunday, May 21st

Just a side note- most of the photos you see coming off the wire services in Iraq these days are taken by Iraqi photojournalists who work, at considerable personal risk, for the Associated Press. American journalists simply cannot travel outside the green zone without a military escort.

GOP Vulnerable

While I'm not about to count my chickens before they're hatched, this article in the NYTimes makes me hopeful. In House Races, More GOP Seats Look Vulnerable:
WASHINGTON, May 19 — For months, even in the face of an avalanche of bad news for Republicans, Democratic ambitions for capturing Congress have collided with an electoral map created to protect Republicans from ouster. Despite polls showing rising support for Democrats and scorn for Republicans, analysts have said Democratic hopes for big gains remain remote, because so few seats are in contention.

That appears to be changing.

Over the past week, a handful of once-safe Republican Congressional seats have come into play, and other Republican incumbents are facing increasingly stiff re-election battles, according to analysts, pollsters and officials in both parties. The change amounts to a slight but significant shift in the playing field, and a potentially pivotal change in the dynamics of this midterm election.

I pray that this is a sign that the american public is finally coming to their senses.

Senator Pat Roberts (R- Douchebag) said today, again, "you have no civil liberties if you're dead."

Hey Senator! In my opinion, if you have no civil liberties, you have no freedom. And you'd might as well be dead.

So come kiss my centaur ass. Then go fuck yourself sideways with a rusty chainsaw, you constitution hating asswipe.

About Colbert and his muchos huevos grandes

I haven't weighed in on the ballsalicious appearance of Stephen Colbert at the WH Press Association dinner last Saturday yet, because, frankly, the whole affair is just baffling to me.

I keep reading about how "Bush stole the show" and how "Colbert just wasn't funny" or "he crossed a line" or "he was inappropriate for the room." And worst of all, I read somewhere that "Bush is president and he deserves our respect." Huh?

Holy fucking moly. Have people gone mad? I watched the video, and I didn't find chimpy funny at all. And while admittedly, I am pretty much a Colbert fan, I thought he was hilarious. So maybe I'm not an unbiased observer.

But here's the rub. Just what did Colbert say that was a surprise to anyone? You can argue about his delivery, but Colbert was dead on in the facts. And that appears to be the problem. Just pointing out the facts is the real sin inside the beltway. Apparently saying the obvious is considered borish and rude. Or worse, uncivil. I'll say this for Colbert, he didn't water down his act to make the boffins in the room more comfortable, and I give him props for that.

And can we please dispense with this "Bush is preznit and he deserves our respect" nonsense? The man has wrecked the country, lied us into an unneccessary war that is responsible for the deaths of thousands of American soldiers and tens of thousands of Iraqi civilians, embarked on a policy of torture and secret rendition, spied on American citizens, flouted congress and the rule of law, outed a CIA agent, and other transgressions too numerous to mention.

He. Does. Not. Deserve. Our. Respect.

He never did. I love my country, and the office of the president has my respect. The man occupying that office has to earn it. I want to ask the media, if after all this, you're still too timid to go after this man, what will it take? if not now, when?

Stop being such a bunch of pussies. Grow your own set of muchos huevos grandes. The country will thank you.

Happy Sweet 16 to the Hubble Space Telescope

NASA and the European Space Agency are celebrating the Hubble Space Telescope's 16th birthday with the release of this trés fabu photograph of a starburst. Photo in the News: Hubble Marks Sweet 16 With Starburst
April 24, 2006—This is one sweet 16 that calls for more than just a first driver's license photo.

NASA and the European Space Agency today marked the 16th anniversary of the launch of the Hubble Space Telescope by releasing a brilliant new image captured by the orbiting observer.

The composite picture, taken last month, depicts the starburst galaxy Messier 82, a hothouse of rapidly forming stars some 12 million light-years away. The image features the long blue disk of the galaxy's core laced with fiery tendrils of hydrogen gas (shown in red). The image is the sharpest wide-angle view ever obtained of the galaxy.

Interstellar eye candy like this has been part of Hubble's stock in trade over the past 16 years, but the telescope has much more to show for its service than an album of cool images.

Since it was launched into space on April 24, 1990, the Hubble has contributed to some significant astronomical studies, from measuring the effects of mysterious dark matter to helping scientists determine the age of the universe itself.

NASA has tentatively cancelled missions to maintain the Hubble, citing safety concerns for astronauts after the destruction of the space shuttle Columbia in 2003.

If Hubble goes dark, it will be 2013 before its replacement is up. That's not just stupid, it's criminal.

An answer to the gas problem

Via Space.com, it appears that black holes are actually green. Black Holes are Actually Green:
A new study finds that the supermassive black holes at the hearts of some galaxies are the most fuel efficient engines in the universe.

"If you could make a car engine that was as efficient as one of these black holes, you could get about a billion miles out of a gallon of gas," said study team leader Steve Allen of the Kavli Institute for Particle Astrophysics and Cosmology at Stanford University. "In anyone's book, that would be pretty green."

The finding, made using NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory and announced in a media teleconference today, is giving scientists insights into how supermassive black holes generate energy and how they affect the galaxies where they make their homes.

A beeeelion miles per gallon! whoo hooo!! I would like a black-hole powered Acura, please.

Moat of Death!!

Wow, I love that name.

Via National Geographic News, a Giant Deep-Sea Volcano with a "moat of death" has been found.
Beneath the waves of the South Pacific lies a volcanic realm nearly as strange as that featured in TV's hit drama Lost.

But instead of a mysterious island, scientists have found a bubbling submarine volcano whose weird features include a swirling vortex, a host of strange animals, and a fearsome zone of toxic waters dubbed the Moat of Death.

The volcano, described in this week's online edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, sits within the crater of a gigantic underwater mountain rising more than 4,500 meters (15,000 feet) from the ocean floor near the island of Samoa.

The seamount, called Vailulu'u, is an active volcano, with a 2-mile-wide (3.2-kilometer-wide) crater. The cone rising within it has been dubbed Nafanua, for the Samoan goddess of war.

I suggest we immediately send a republican congressional delegation there on a fact-finding mission.

Easter plush

We don't much care about Easter. Especially since it was freaking 96 degrees here today, and promises to be 100 tomorrow. Feh.

In the meantime, Maxx is sure those evil little peeps are just waiting for their chance to sneak back in. He is ever vigilant.

Not a Drill??

Billmon links to an op-ed from Richard Clarke and Steve Simon about the impending war on Iran, Bombs that Would Backfire:
...The president assures us he will seek a diplomatic solution to the Iranian crisis. And there is a role for threats of force to back up diplomacy and help concentrate the minds of our allies. But the current level of activity in the Pentagon suggests more than just standard contingency planning or tactical saber-rattling.

The parallels to the run-up to to war with Iraq are all too striking: remember that in May 2002 President Bush declared that there was "no war plan on my desk" despite having actually spent months working on detailed plans for the Iraq invasion. Congress did not ask the hard questions then. It must not permit the administration to launch another war whose outcome cannot be known, or worse, known all too well.

That's hardly surprising. Bush's lips have been moving, which means he's certainly lying. But this little nugget that Billmon posts in his update is simply terrifying (from the transcript of Col. Sam Gardiner talking with little Wolfie Blitzer):
GARDINER: Actually, Jim, I would say – and this may shock some – I think the decision has been made and military operations are under way . . .
The Iranians have been saying American military troops are in there, have been saying it for almost a year. I was in Berlin two weeks ago, sat next to the ambassador, the Iranian ambassador to the IAEA. And I said, "Hey, I hear you're accusing Americans of being in there operating with some of the units that have shot up revolution guard units."

He said, quite frankly, "Yes, we know they are. We've captured some of the units, and they've confessed to working with the Americans."

The evidence is mounting that that decision has already been made.

This is bush, using his "gut instinct" again, and getting it dead wrong. These nutters will do this, because they think they can, and because they think it will save their hides. They won't consult congress, and they won't listen to anyone that has the temerity to tell them that this is a really, really bad idea. And as the above exchange shows, the press will ignore all the signs and then be awed and amazed when the bombs do start to drop.

Amazing. And disgusting.

You know what I would like? a world where we didn't have a lunatic in the white house and where Billmon didn't feel compelled to sit up at 1:00 am posting things guaranteed to scare the crap out of me.
